Some Kargil names became part of national memory. Others remained largely within their regiments and families.

Lieutenant Colonel Ramakrishnan Vishwanathan was second-in-command of 18 Grenadiers during operations around Tololing in the Drass sector. He was killed during the fighting and posthumously awarded the Vir Chakra.

His story reveals an overlooked kind of leadership: the senior officer who is not necessarily the public face of a battle, but remains present where the danger is greatest. It also reminds us to see Tololing as a collective campaign rather than reducing its capture to one celebrated individual.

The less-famous leaders behind famous victories deserve to be remembered too.
