Brigadier Mohammad Usman – The Commander Who Stayed

When tribal forces supported by Pakistan advanced into Jammu and Kashmir, Brigadier Mohammad Usman was entrusted with the defence of Naushera. His men were heavily outnumbered, but they repelled repeated attacks and held the position.

He subsequently led the operation to recapture Jhangar. On 3 July 1948, after inspecting defensive positions, he was killed by enemy artillery fire.

His importance extends beyond battlefield leadership. At Partition, he chose to remain with India despite reportedly being offered senior opportunities across the border. His soldiers remembered a commander who shared their hardships and demanded nothing from them that he would not face himself
